SPECIALIST and Christmas markets could soon be coming to Barrow.

Barrow BID have asked residents if they would like to see more specialists markets in Barrow and if they think they would increase the footfall in the town centre.

The response was an overwhelming yes, with 93 per cent voting yes, as they increase footfall. Seven per cent voted no, stating they take business away from local companies.

A spokesman for Barrow BID said: “At Barrow BID we want to try different things to increase footfall in the town centre and increase the offer to visitors.

“We feel that specialist markets could benefit the town and this is backed up by 93 per cent of people who voted.

“We will be looking at hosting a specialist market in 2019 and will again use Facebook to gauge people’s opinions on its success.”

Comments from the survey included the likes of Bev Wheddon, who said: “I think it is a great idea if they are actually traditional Christmas/food markets.

“In the past it seems the only things on offer are already for sale in our own market, just at a much higher price.

“This isn’t beneficial to anyone.

“I loved the continental market that used to set up outside the town hall.”

Iain Raven said: “In Ulverston, the local volunteer-run festivals try to work with the resident businesses as much as possible.”

Maggie Clark said: “I like it when the other market sellers come to Barrow as I get some good things.

“Why can’t the council just let people sell things everybody’s got to make a living plus new things is what we like to see in this town I love it when the high street has them markets.”

Richard Wilson said: “As long as they keep to a half sensible pricing structure.

“I bought some olives and it was scooped out and weighed last time they had markets.

“It cost me £7 heavily over-priced.

“But if balance and choice is right it’s a good idea.”
