ONE of the UK’s largest building trade tool and product suppliers is set to expand by opening a distribution warehouse in Ulverston.

Screwfix plan to occupy one of the four units that make up the first phase of the development process for the town's Beehive Business Park.

The tool trade warehouse unit will join Aldi, and M&S Food, which have agreed planning permission as retailers for the site.

Ulverston town mayor and councillor, Dave Webster said: "The news about Screwfix is excellent.

"A warehouse would bring prosperous jobs to the town.

"However, I'm aware there is a Screwfix distribution centre in Barrow.

"So, as long as the new warehouse in Ulverston does not affect jobs from Barrow, then I'm all for it.

"I just don't want to see job-shifting from one town to the other."

Screwfix’s warehouse will be part of the first phase of development at the Beehive which is due for completion in 2020.

Early site work is progressing well and the Beehive Business Park confirmed the site's first phase is on schedule for completion.

The Beehive Business Park stated once the development is fully occupied, the park will become a real asset to Ulverston in terms of providing jobs, goods and services for local people, and drawing shoppers to the town.

The Beehive site will also provides more car parking for customers.

The Beehive Business Park project had been delayed by various matters including the finalisation of the contractual details and minor planning amendments.

Another company, which will join Screwfix on the site will be Lake District Farmers, a Lindal meat producer.

Together, the four confirmed companies now form the first phase of the development along with an additional 6,000 sq ft. employment unit.

The site work is being carried out by Caddick Construction, while planning permission for the site is allocated by South Lakes District Council.

Screwfix were not able to comment on the news.
