MP Tim Farron has written to the chief executive of Network Rail calling for a rethink of plans to close a large section of the West Coast Mainline during the summer.
The line will be closed south of Warrington for 16 days due to engineering works, which Mr Farron, who is the MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, argues will cause a "major blow" to the Cumbria’s £2.9bn visitor economy.
Mr Farron said: “It’s time for Network Rail to show flexibility and go back to the drawing board and rethink these nonsensical plans.”
