A prominent Cumbrian legal firm is relocating after nearly 50 years to accommodate its growing team.

Bendles Solicitors has been in Carlisle for 200 years and been based at the city’s Portland Square since 1970.

But it is now on the move and will open its new purpose-built premises at Kingstown Industrial Estate next week.

Stuart Irving, partner, said: “This expansion is an exciting progression for Bendles.

“Bendles has acquired Tiffen & Co and Beaty & Co Solicitors in the past year and with a growing staff, a relocation to a purpose built larger premises was logical.

“As a long established business, client care is key for us.

“We have invested in a number of technologies in recent years which has enabled our business to better serve our clients and to modernise our working practices.

“The relocation to Kingstown will further ensure that we, as a business, continue to develop to meet the needs and expectations of our clients.”

Bendles Solicitors acquired Wigton law firm Beaty & Co in December.

Jonty Hanlon, Bendles property partner, said: “The link with Beaty & Co is a natural one for us.

“It should allow us to grow more effectively over the next few years.”

Twelve months ago, it took over estate agents Tiffen & Co, which has been in the property market since the 1880s.

Neil Emmerson, who was general manager for Tiffen & Co, is managing director of the new Tiffen company.

At the time, John Stevenson, Carlisle MP and managing partner of Bendles LLP, said: “The acquisition of Tiffen & Co is a strategic move.

“The link between the two businesses should be good for customers and clients.

“It will also allow us to grow our professional services through diversification.”
