A living green wall to help clean up the fume-laden air on Kendal’s Lowther Street has been approved by South Lakeland District Council.
The narrow, one-way street is the busy main route for traffic heading south to north through town.
Plans by Kendal Town Council would see a 3.2m wide band of plants covering part of South Lakeland House, 3m above the pavement.
Large textured-leaf varieties would be chosen for their ability to absorb dust particles and reduce toxic pollution.
According to plans, the green wall would “improve a particularly ugly wall and bland street scene”.
Soil-filled planters would be linked to the mains water supply, and the overall cost would be £8,701.50 plus VAT.
