WITH National Butchers Week taking place next week, we asked readers to recommend their favourite butchers.

Here are the best places, as voted by you, ordered with the most commented first.

1: Steven Wilson’s Butchers, Corby Hill

The independent Carlisle butchers was the most popular choice among our readers, with more than 20 people commenting in favour of the shop just off the A69. On the News & Star’s Facebook page, Lee Cooper said: “Steve Wilson butchers Corby Hill, best steak pie in Carlisle.”

Karen Mallinson commented: “Steve Wilson pies and meats all quality and friendly, nice staff.”

Agreeing with Karen was Joan Trickett, she wrote: “Steve Wilson, Corby Hill, top quality all rounder.”

Mandi Bell posted: “Steven Wilson, Corby Hill, butchers, the best meat and pies around.”

2: Walsh’s Butchers, Maryport

A total of 10 votes behind Steven Wilson’s was the Crosby Street store. Angela Ireland commented: “Peter Walsh, Crosby Street, Maryport. Fantastic meat and best Cumberland sausage ever.”

Paul M Armstrong agreed, posting: “Peter Walsh, best Cumberland sausage in Maryport.”

3: W. Lindsay & Sons, Cockermouth

Tied on nine votes with Marshall’s Butchers in Workington, the family business has been selling meat since 1868. On Facebook, Di Sharrock posted: “W Lindsay Cockermouth. Lovely helpful staff and excellent quality meat.”

Maureen Williamson commented: “W Lindsay Cockermouth, excellent.” Paula Atkin added: “Lindsay’s, Cockermouth, superb.”

4: Marshall’s Butchers, Workington

Tied with the previous choice, the Corporation Road shop was popular with readers. Joanne Birney said: “Marshall’s Butchers in Workington, excellent quality and choice and all the staff are friendly and helpful.”

David Mclaughlin said: “Marshall’s Workington, I always do a Morecambe run when I’m visiting home.” Julia Reed added: “Marshall’s, Workington. Excellent local quality meat.”

5: W. Kirkup & Sons, Longtown

The family butchers also have a store in Silloth. Supporting the Longtown shop was Sandra Stitt. She commented: “Kirkup butchers, Longtown, great fresh selection and nothing’s too much trouble.”

6: D Paisley’s Butchers, Wigton

Located on King Street, the butchers was a popular choice among readers. Emily Irving posted: “Paisley’s of Wigton, best meat selection and the staff they go above and beyond even for awkward customers like myself.”
