A POPULAR north Cumbrian chip shop has launched a new monthly gluten free evening.

Shap Chippy held its first event on Monday, and hailed it a huge success.

The owners recently completed a Coeliac UK training course, to ensure food is suitable for those who must avoid traces of gluten at all costs.

Those with coeliac disease and gluten intolerances can't eat from standard chip shop menus as the gluten-containing batter is present in the fryers, making it unsafe.

But this monthly event allows these customers to enjoy fish and chips without the risk of contamination.

Everything served on the night - including fish, chips, sausages, battered halloumi and fishcakes - are completely gluten free.

Customers can eat in the restaurant or opt to take their food away.

The business is celebrating after positive reviews were posted on TripAdvisor and Google.

Ashley Phillips, from Shap Chippy, said: "We wanted to offer a gluten free option, and after completing the Coeliac UK training course and with the support of the NFFF (National Fish Fryers Federation) we decided that a dedicated evening would be the best way to ensure our fish and chips are definitely gluten free.

"Our fish and chips are award winning, and we wanted to make sure it’s just as good regardless of whether there is gluten in there or not. The customers were very happy and most couldn’t tell the difference."

Shap Chippy will be running the event on the last Monday of each month. The next one is Monday, March 25.
