PUZZLED parents are being given the chance to sign up for a club teaching them skills to help out with their child’s homework.

Furness College is inviting mums, dads and carers of primary school pupils back to the classroom to learn basic maths and English skills so they can support their children’s studies.

Sessions will run twice a week for five weeks, starting on Monday February 25 after half term.

Head of area for maths and English Hilary Gregory said, for some parents, helping their children with homework could be quite daunting.

“Often parents want to help but don’t have the know-how either because they were taught differently, didn’t do well at school or maybe it is a long time since they left school,” she said.

“We will provide advice on how to support your child, basic maths and English skills and stress management tips that will give parents more confidence.

“We can also show them how to access to literacy and numeracy resources that will make things easier.”

The hour-long sessions will run at the Channelside campus on Mondays between 5pm and 6pm and Fridays from 10.30am to 11.30am.

They are aimed at parents with children in year five and year six who are sitting SATs or will be facing them soon.

The college said numbers were limited.

Adelle Halesworth, a parent from Barrow, has signed up for the sessions.

She said: “I have signed up for it because I might be able to help my son with his SATs.

“He is in year six and if he thinks I am willing to help it might encourage and motivate him to learn too.

“I want to set him a good example and it will be a refresher for me because it’s been so many years since I was at school.

“Children need to know so much more now when they are at junior school and I think this club will be a good opportunity for me to ask questions, plus it’s running at a time when I’m free.”
