Marathon climber Rebecca Dooley will be celebrating on New Year’s Eve - with a well-earned rest.

The mum-of-two has climbed Binsey fell every day throughout 2018.

She hiked up the 447 metres or 1,467 feet in the teeth of the Beast from the East and she marched up it during the scorching heat of the summer.

Finding time between family and work as medicines manager at Caldbeck surgery was difficult.

On some days she made the walk at 4.30am, some had to be squeezed in late at night and she had to put in a double shift to cover for the days she was away on holiday.

The marathon finishes on Monday morning, exactly one year on from the start.

Rebecca, 43, who runs Amy’s Care, a dementia day care and social club in Keswick and Carlisle with husband Fraser, vowed to walk up Binsey on New Year’s Eve 2017 to raise funds for a new minibus adapted for wheelchairs.

She was aiming to raise £36,500 but said: “I’ve raised enough for the minibus and for a wheelchair adapted car, which is above and beyond what I was hoping.

“We will know the final figure at the end of January when Cumbria County Council match-funds our amount.”

Rebecca reckons she has covered 730 miles on her walks and climbed the equivalent of seven and a half Everests.

Despite her huge achievement, she is not sad at the end of her year-long adventure, and added: “It has been a long year, I have really enjoyed it, but I have struggled mentally and physically for the past three weeks. It will be really nice to have more free time to myself.

“For me, the best part is that I can get up and have a mini adventure and now with the adapted minibus, we can provide mini adventures for people who can’t get out on their own and we can take them to the park or out in the Lakes or to the garden centre.”
