There’s nothing like a spot of last minute Christmas shopping to get you in the mood for the big day.

Well at least for some that’s the case, as people in their thousands took part in Super Saturday, expected to be one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Everything from children’s toys to Ann Summers underwear was bought by shoppers in Carlisle on Saturday, with people travelling from across the county to spend their money in the city.

For some retailers however, it was not all sunshine and flowers.

Mallin Models - which is a collectibles store in Abbey Street - has suffered from a particularly poor festive period.

“It’s been very quiet,” explained 71-year-old Malcolm Ward, who runs the shop with his partner Linda Wilkinson, 69.

“I think we must hold the record of not taking a penny for six days. What can you do?

“We won’t be running to mama.”

Why has the shop been struggling?

“I keep saying that it is partly down to the humdrum over Brexit,” said Malcolm. “Some people say there is no money around, but there is money - people are keeping it because they don’t what is going to be around the corner. People are very picky with how they spend their money.”

Karen Christine, 30, and her three-year-old daughter Colton-Cruz Christine, were in town for a spot of Christmas shopping.

“We have four sons, so I’m buying some last minute bits like trainers and tracksuits for them.

“In JD I got two pairs of trainers on sale and the Entertainer had some good deals, some were as low as six pounds which is good.”

Also travelling the distance to shop in the city were the Colaluca family from Whitehaven.

Caroline Colaluca, 62 - who was buying presents for her 22 grandchildren - made the trip with her two daughters, Toni, 31, and Kerryanne, 29.

Caroline said: “We have had some good deals, there’s been some great deals in the shops.”

Independent clothes shop, Institute Menswear in St Cuthbert’s Lane, has got busier after a slow start to the festive season.

“It has been slow, but it’s built up,” explained owner Richard Creary, 48. “This last week has been good, there’s been a lot of last minute shopping.”
