A local council has agreed to extend a popular scheme which has helped to give businesses in the area a new lease of life.

Allerdale Council’s executive body recently agreed to extend the popular facelift scheme aimed at helping to fund exterior improvements for businesses in Wigton town centre.

A total of 84 applications have so far been approved for the scheme, which helps to part fund improvements to the front of properties, in an effort to make the area more attractive to residents and visitors and improve the appeal of the centre of the town.

So far a total of £70,000 has been paid out by the council, with a further £43,700 being match funded by the property owners.

Now, council bosses have revealed that additional funds have now been allocated to the scheme.

The money is available to all those who own properties in Wigton town centre, though priority has been given to properties on High Street, Market Place, King Street, Church Street and Water Street.

Among the beneficiaries of the scheme have been True Health & Beauty in Duke Street, Unique & Chic,(which is next door), Hare & Hounds, and the Pearl Palace.

The scheme provides up to £900 for each property, with the owner of the property asked to match-fund 10 per cent of the grant total.

Grant funds can be used for things like paint, labour costs, the repair and replacement of damaged items like drain pipes or guttering, and improvements to external lighting.

Mark Fryer, executive member with responsibility for economic growth and town centre development at Allerdale Council, said: “This is a great scheme which has worked really well in Maryport in the past, so it’s really good to see so many people in Wigton taking advantage of it too.

“Some small changes have made such a huge difference to the area so far, so I’m pleased that it will be continued.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to apply while they have the chance.”

The scheme was initially launched in September of last year, with a deadline of December set for applicants.

However, it has consequently been extended to carry on supporting local businesses in Wigton town centre.
