Furness College students styled models in the theme of the games, incorporating the Olympic rings, the Olympic flame and a Grecian style representing the birthplace of the Olympics.

The learners took on the challenge enthusiastically creating a stunning range of avant-garde creations. They were judged by hairdressing industry professionals.

First year winner Natasha Owen, from Aqua Salon, Bowness, said: “It was a great experience and I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next competition.”

Stewart Hart, Aqua Salon’s owner said: “We are impressed with the way Natasha took this task on board and how she took her inspiration from the Olympics, taking her model back to basics, using Greek mythology as a guide to creating her winning style.”

Second year winner Hannah Whitaker, from Spectrum, Ulverston, said: “I am very pleased with coming first in the competition, I was really happy and proud of my work. It has given my confidence boost in this aspect of hairdressing.”

Spectrum owner, Janette Stainton, said: “Spectrum is very proud of Hannah’s achievement, congratulations on being first in the avant-garde Olympic theme hair up competition.”

Emma Jeory, assessor for hairdressing apprentices at Furness College, said: “This competition gave the students an opportunity to demonstrate their high level skills as well as go wild with their creativity and imagination. Although there were only two winners, the judges were very impressed with the standard of all the entries.”
