ECSTATIC students are celebrating after achieving world class exam results and university places.

Windermere School students shared hugs as they collected their International Baccalaureate Diploma results yesterday.

The IB, an alternative to A-Levels, is scored out of a maximum of 45 points.

Charity Cookson shed tears of joy as she realised she had gained 40 points and a place a Durham University to study law.

The 18-year-old, of Bowness, was the highest achieving local girl with her results being in the top 3.9 per cent of students worldwide.

Charity said: “I feel really happy. I was hoping for 38 and I was just so relieved when I saw the 40.

“It’s such an amazing school, with the opportunities provided and the teachers are so helpful. I’m excited about university.”

The school’s leading pupil was Amy White, of Berkshire, who achieved 43 points, which was in the top 0.7 per cent of scores across the globe. She has a place at King’s College London to study business management.

Juliette Sidi, 17, of Ambleside, gained 36 points, and she now plans to study biomedical sciences rather than business management.

She said: “I’m so, so happy, I’ve shocked myself.

“The teachers have been so supportive.”

Natassia King, 18, of Ulverston, achieved 33 points and a place at Leeds University to study art and design.

She said: “I feel over the moon, I’m very excited. This is school has been a great place to learn.”

The IB covers six subjects – three at standard level and three at higher level, an extended essay, a theory of knowledge and a creativity, action and service project.

Windermere School remains above world average, and 10 students gained more than 34, the equivalent of four grade As at A-level. Amy and Charity’s scores are equivalent to in excess of five grade As at A-level.

Headmaster Ian Lavender, said: “I am delighted that so many of our students have, once again, achieved so highly.

“The IB continues to provide an fabulous foundation for university and students who left last year have told us how far ahead of other students they found themselves during their first year of study.’’
