Volunteers keeping streets clean of litter

VOLUNTEERS have been rolling their sleeves up and stepping out to take part in the Big Clean.
Events have taken place in Bootle, Millom, Dalton, Ulverston and Penny Bridge as well as across Barrow.
The campaign, now in its second year, has been backed by Centrica, Barrow Borough Council, Copeland Borough Council and South Lakeland District Council. Scores of volunteers have turned out to help clean up discarded sweet wrappers, bottles and cigarette butts.
Councillor Liz Young helped organise an event in Dalton, where Dalton Town Tidy Group volunteers were joined by PCSO John McVea and filled two bin bags with rubbish.
Cllr Young said: “We managed to clean a few places where the street cleaners don’t usually go. Last year we would have had at least double.
“If there is rubbish outside my house I pick it up, it doesn’t matter if it’s mine or not. I don’t understand how people can just look at it.
“It’s a case of education and people being a bit more proactive – if everybody did that there wouldn’t be a problem.”
Meanwhile, pupils at Cartmel Priory Secondary School helped clean the site collecting discarded drinks bottles and sweet wrappers.
Gemma Brown, special educational needs coordinator, at Cartmel Priory, said: “We’ve been taking part all week, each day has been a different form.
“I think it’s made people think of the consequences of litter a bit more.
“Outside school where the pupils wait for the bus there’s often litter but we have noticed an improvement.
“It is a really clean area but it’s improved even more.
“Things like the Big Clean help to stop litter from getting worse.”
