INSPIRATIONAL teenager Alice Pyne was among the guests of honour at a school’s prize giving ceremony.

Ulverston Victoria High School pupils celebrated their achievements at a well-attended event at the Coronation Hall on Tuesday.

Awards were handed out to students for their successes in and out of the classroom and the school presented a cheque for £702.29 to Alice Pyne for her charity, Alice’s Escapes.

Pupils held a non-uniform day in aid of the charity, which provides short breaks in the Lake District to sick children and their families.

The charity was set up earlier this year by Alice, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 12.

Alice, now 16, said: “It is amazing how much they have raised.”

Vicky Pyne, Alice’s mother, added: “Everyone at the school has been really great. These children do not have to raise money for charity but they chose to and I think it is brilliant.

“I am hoping we are now going to be able to secure a static caravan for the families, which is a real boost.”

The school also showcased its pupils’ talents with a number of performances and speeches during the ceremony.

Headteacher Denis Fay said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for the youngsters to celebrate commitment to the school, achievement at all levels and for some to show their talents.”

Assistant headteacher Roger Cahalin added: “We are fantastically proud of our pupils and we want to recognise achievement across the school and the success of all our students.”

Also in attendance at the ceremony were Ulverston town mayor, Brenda Marr, and corporate director of children’s services for Cumbria County Council, Julia Morrison.
