Ulverston landlords object over rival bar

A BAR operator is trying to prove he is not going to be a noisy neighbour if the council grants him a permanent licence for his new premises in Ulverston.
Andy Steele has opened Bar 6, in Daltongate, for the past three weekends on a temporary event licence. His premises licence application is due to be considered this week.
Four neighbours have registered objections to the plans, one citing disturbances arising the last time the building operated as a bar.
But Mr Steele said he has shown over the last month that neighbours need not fear a new bar in the area.
He said: “With pubs closing at a rate of one a week, if somewhere is opening it must be a good thing.”
A number of premises in Ulverston are currently vacant, including the Bird in Hand pub and the Glaxo Club.
Mr Steele added: “The council has just made the (Stockbridge Lane) car park near me 20p for an hour to encourage people to go into town.
“I am the first place they go past and now it’s open, not empty.”
He also claimed the evidence of the past three weeks had prompted one of the neighbours to decide to retract their objections at the meeting, taking place at the Coronation Hall on Friday.
One neighbour, Anne Baines, wrote to South Lakeland District Council describing the “absolute misery” she endured when the building was previously open as Capitola Wine Bar.
She added: “If this application is passed, my house will no longer be a home I want to return to.”
Dave Hillman, licensee of the next door Hope and Anchor pub, and Roger Chattaway, owner of the Farmers Arms, also objected on the grounds of public nuisance.
They said the bar has nowhere to store refuse or for people to smoke, meaning customers are likely to end up on the narrow pavement in front of the building.
Mr Hillman also pointed out the fact that there are several vacant pubs that would be more suitable locations for a new establishment.
He added: “I would like to see them all reopened. Competition is not an issue.”
