Ulverston group mooted to secure long-term future of hall

FEARS over the future of Coronation Hall have prompted Ulverston town councillors to consider setting up a group to secure its long term future.
Friends of Coronation Hall would bring together the people that use the hall to ensure its continued existence and identify new opportunities for the future.
South Lakeland District Council, which manages the hall, insists it is under no immediate threat.
Councillor Colin Pickthall said: “The plan is in the early stages but I think there is a great undercurrent of concern for Coronation Hall in and around the town. I hear expressions of concern all the time.
“I am not criticising SLDC on this because they have put money in over the years to keep Coronation Hall open.”
An SLDC spokesman said: “There are no plans to stop funding Coronation Hall. Service reviews happen all the time but I am not aware that it is under review.
“It is business as usual as far as we are concerned.”
At the last town council meeting Ulverston mayor, Councillor Brenda Marr, proposed a formal meeting with groups that are involved with the hall to see if the idea can be taken forward.
Cllr Pickthall said: “A new group would allow us to prepare for the worst case scenario, as well as the best, and identify new sources of income so we can make sure the place stays open and thrives.”
David Phillips, manager of Coronation Hall, said: “People may talk about our future but until someone talks to us it is all just rumours.”

Coronation Hall is a wonderful venue, and one that the people of Ulverston can be proud of. As an outsider, but one who comes to the town often, I can only add my concern that the future of the Hall is secure, and hope that enough ammunition can be packed into whatever report is finally sent to the S.L.D.C. to blow away any threat that might be being covertly forming in the minds of as yet unknown enemies of Ulverston's heritage.

oh for gods sake - the people who actually run the venue have already said there is NO threat to there funding! There is no need for this, other than bored people trying to find something to occupy them.
