Support workers look to the future

A GROUP of former substance users is looking to the future with a series of specially-designed management training for its trustees.
Cumbria Starting Point, based in Whitehaven, is a successful local recovery service offering peer support provided in a safe, friendly, non-judgmental environment for people who wish to recover from drug or alcohol abuse and maintain their recovery.
“Being a well run charity doesn’t come easy,” said manager Debs Clements. “It takes real investment in trustees, staff and volunteers.
“The Northern Rock Foundation provided Cumbria Starting Point with a grant to access a programme of bespoke training delivered by Cumbria CVS,’’ Debs said. “As a progressive charity, we recognise the value of training and the things that we have learnt in essential subjects will strengthen our organisation and ultimately benefit all those who access our services.
“Starting Point offers a unique supportive environment in which people can recover from addiction and grow a future.’’
Effective governance, managing and supervising staff, running effective meetings, minute taking and procedures were all covered in the training which took place over four sessions at the charity’s premises on Lowther Street.
Tony Brown, of Cumbria CVS, said: “It is important that charities and voluntary sector organisations are able to ensure a strong board of trustees and training is a great way to provide them with skills and knowledge to match their enthusiasm and commitment.”
Debs added: “We would have no hesitation in seeking further assistance from CVS to help us with more bespoke training.
“We’d also like to say a big thank you to Northern Rock Foundation for providing this opportunity through their funding.”
