Students are no bar to old Carlisle pub reopening

Students are set to move into a building that housed a landmark pub – but developers hope part of it will still end up as a bar.
The upstairs of The Globe in Carlisle will be open as student accommodation within weeks as a new academic term starts.
The building, in a prominent position in the city’s Caldewgate, has been empty for nearly two years but was bought by building firm boss Wayne McKnight in January. He and his workers have been revamping it, with the ground floor available as a commercial unit.
Mr McKnight, a partner in McKnight & Son Builders, said he would still like this part to become a pub once again.
“I would love it to be,” he said. “I applied for a liquor licence.
“I’m not going to manage it myself but ideally we would look for a tenant to take it over.”
The building sits on one of the city’s busiest roads and is next to the Sainsbury supermarket development.
Its revamp is another stage in the ongoing redevelopment of Caldewgate, an area badly damaged during the 2005 floods.
The firm was involved in the overhaul of a stretch of buildings on another of Carlisle’s main routes when they redeveloped Stanley Hall in Botchergate, which features shops and cafes.
The Globe closed in December 2010 leaving just one pub, The Joiners Arms, in Caldewgate.
The area used to be home to several bars, including one of the city’s oldest, The Malsters Arms. It was demolished in 2004 and the site used for student flats.
