PUPILS from across South Cumbria will help to create the largest children’s choir. Schoolchildren will be performing at the Manchester Arena from tonight alongside some of the stars of the Diamond Jubilee number one single, Sing. NATALIE CHAPPLES reports

YOUNGSTERS cannot contain their excitement about heading to an international concert arena to sing one of 2012’s most recognisable songs.

Pupils from schools across Furness and South Cumbria are taking part in Young Voices at Manchester Arena from tonight until Friday.

Some 7,000 children will be involved in the performances, which this year includes the number one single, Sing, created by Gary Barlow and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The children will sing the hit track with the African Children’s Choir who performed on the single and at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert held outside Buckingham Palace.

The pupils will also sing various pop, rock and folk songs, which will also include performing with Britain’s Got Talent runner-up and singer, Connie Talbot.

Pupils and families from Greengate Infant and Nursery School, Barrow, Ormsgill Primary and Nursery School, Barrow, and Grange CE Primary School will perform tonight.

Tomorrow, St Columba’s Catholic Primary, Walney, takes to the stage, and on Friday it is the turn of Greengate Junior School, Barrow, South Walney Junior School and North Walney Junior School.

The little ones from Greengate Infant and Nursery School have created banners for the trip, which will include a contingent of more than 40 pupils from the Barrow town centre school.

Headteacher Caroline Hoggarth said: “They are all beside themselves with excitement.

“The experience will be amazing for them. We love singing and dancing here.”

Some 40 children from South Walney Junior School will sing at the Friday show.

Michelle Banks, assistant head and Year Six teacher, said: “They are all really excited, particularly about singing with the African Children’s Choir.”

Mrs Banks said the pop section, which includes the song by Olly Murs and Bruno Mars, has really sparked an interested in singing among the boys.

Young Voices is designed to unify children from across the region, boost their confidence and provide lifelong memories for the them and their families.

Ben Lewis, managing director of Young Voices, said: “Every pupil should be exposed to music at an early age, whether the joy is singing, playing an instrument or loving the sound of music, the potential benefits are huge.”
