Seminars to clarify work regulations for Cumbrian firms

A firm of Penrith solicitors is holding seminars to help employers deal with changes in the employment law that could cost UK businesses more than £100 million a year.
The move aims to keep Cumbrian businesses informed following a ruling by the European Court of Justice which means that workers who fall ill while on holiday will have a legal right to take additional paid leave at a later date.
Workers who fall ill towards the end of the year would also be able to carry over unused leave into the next accounting year, as long as a sick note is provided.
It has been estimated that this ruling, once implemented, could cost UK businesses more than £100m a year.
Christopher Strutt, founding partner of Strutt & Co, said: “This judgement could have significant cost implications across the UK. However, there are certain steps that employers can take to limit their commercial risk.
“We want to help employers by making them aware of potential risks to their business and informing them how they can protect their business and save money.
“We are therefore holding a series of employment seminars over the next 12 months to give employers of all sizes advice.”
The Working Time Directive legislation has been clarified following an appeal by a Spanish trade union against a group of department stores.
The first seminar will be held at the firm’s Penrith offices on Thursday, July 19. A second will take place on August 23.
