Sellafield to represent Cumbria at regional apprenticeship finals

SELLAFIELD Ltd will represent Cumbria in the regional final of the National Apprenticeship Awards 2013.

It is be competing to win the ‘Macro Employer of the Year’ title at the ceremony, run by the National Apprenticeship Service, to be held at Lancashire County Council Chambers in Preston on September 4.

The awards, in their 10th year, celebrate the achievements of apprentices and apprenticeship employers.

Sellafield Ltd operates the Sellafield nuclear site on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

It has 200 apprentices within the workforce and works alongside training provider GENII to develop and deliver its apprentice-training provision.

The apprenticeship programme has close links with local schools and operates an ambassadors’ scheme to encourage youngsters to participate in the programme.

Almost all Sellafield apprentices secure full-time jobs when they successfully complete their training.

Sue Price, divisional area director for the National Apprenticeship Service in the North, said: “Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to earn while they learn in a real job.

“Hiring apprentices is a proven way of attracting new talent and developing a motivated, skilled and diverse workforce. All of the North West award finalists demonstrate these benefits in action.”

The National Apprenticeship Awards has received more than 1,600 entries.

The regional winners will go through to the national final in Birmingham in November.
