A Scout from Carlisle has been selected to go to the 14th World Scout Moot in Canada next year.

James Ferguson: ‘Excited’

James Ferguson, 20, of Wetheral, is one of 215 young adults to represent the UK at the event.

A spokeswoman for the Scouts said: “As well as being a fantastic opportunity for young people, the impact of this event will be felt far and wide, both in terms of the people brought together from the immediate area and nationally.

“James was selected because of their energy and enthusiasm for international Scouting. James showed a desire to learn about different cultures and ways of living.

“However, the most important attribute was that he has a hunger for adventure.”

A moot is an international gathering of Scouts aged between 18 and 25. It is taking place in Canada for the first time, from August 8 to 18, bringing together up to 5,000 young adults from around the world.

Attending the moot is an opportunity of a lifetime for James and the other young adults selected. Not only will they get to meet 5,000 young people from all over the world – and share their knowledge and experiences while working towards greater international understanding – this moot offers them the chance to learn new skills that they can use in other aspects of their life.

James said: “I’m really excited about Canada Moot 2013. It’s going to be an amazing opportunity to meet Scouts, not just from Europe, but around the world.

“The chance to make new friends and contacts is something I’m really looking forward to.”

Survival expert and chief scout Bear Grylls said: “Congratulations to James that he has been selected to go on this trip of a lifetime.

“While lots of people know that Scouting is all about adventure, they often don’t realise that adult volunteers get to do just as much as our young members through their involvement.

“The World Scout Moot in Canada is the best example of this. Over the course of the moot they will be able to meet people from around the world, take part in amazing adventures and experiences and be challenged to think about global issues in a new light.”
