Scheme aims to brighten up town’s roads

DRIVERS heading into Barrow will be greeted by an “oasis of colour” thanks to a new scheme giving businesses the chance to sponsor floral displays for the town’s roundabouts.
Barrow Borough Council has launched the initiative in a bid to improve the appearance of key areas of road and open spaces across the borough.
The first success story comes in the form of a facelift for the Roose roundabout, which has been sponsored by safety equipment and clothing firm, Deltawaite.
Karin Brocklebank, director of the Roose Road company, said: “We are very pleased to support the planting scheme to help enhance our community.
“The original roundabout was a little overgrown and unstructured, despite being a key approach to the town.
“It seemed an obvious choice for us to select this particular roundabout makeover and we are delighted with the result.”
The council has launched the scheme to encourage everyone to take pride in the area, and the funds raised through sponsorship will be spent on plantings for 11 key roundabouts across the borough.
Ann Taylforth, town centre and festivals manager, said: “These are all on key junctions so it is really a win-winsituation, with companies benefiting from an advertising opportunity and the community and borough as a whole benefiting from the generosity and pride the business community are taking in the area. Without this sponsorship, there would not be the money available to undertake these replanting schemes.”
Anyone interested in sponsoring a roundabout or floral display can contact Mrs Taylforth on 01229 876389.
