A HIGH flying Furness student has been awarded a university scholarship.

AWARD: Excellence Scholarship winner Samuel Antony Mann, 19, from Barrow receives his £4,500 cheque from Bangor University’s pro vice-chancellor, Wyn Thomas GERALLT LLEWELYN

Samuel Antony Mann has received a £4,500 Excellence Scholarship from Bangor University, where he studies zoology.

The 19-year-old, from Barrow, won the scholarship for gaining the highest academic attainment in the School of Biological Sciences. He was awarded two A* and two As in A-Level biology, geology, chemistry and maths at Barrow Sixth Form College.

This month he won a College Memorial Award for Outstanding Performance at GCE Advanced Level.

The award-winning student said: “It was such a shock and a privilege to find out that I had won the scholarship. It will help me buy books for wider reading and pay for trips relevant to my course.

“I heard about Bangor at a Higher Education fair in Kendal and with the Menai Strait, Anglesey and woods close by it seemed like the most fitting location to study zoology.

“The best thing about the course is the wide range of interesting topics and the connectivity of them all.”

Carys Roberts, head of student recruitment, said: “We’re delighted to be able to recognise Samuel’s academic achievement upon entry, and are confident that he will go on to excel in his studies during his time here at Bangor.
