Revealed: Cumbria police chief’s £5,600 expenses

RETURN flights to Germany, restaurant bills and hotel stays are among the items paid for by the public purse for a police chief.
Between April 2010 and April 2011 acting chief constable Stuart Hyde claimed for a number of things including return flights from Munich to Manchester, with German airline Lufthansa, and expenses from a hotel stay in Bahrain.
The figures, revealed following a Freedom of Information request, show Mr Hyde racked up a corporate credit card bill of £5,643.54.
On February 18 last year, he spent £275.02 on return flights from Munich to Manchester with Lufthansa to fly back to the UK from his holiday to attend a Police Authority conference, before again using public funds to return to Munich.
Expense claims also include £130 of public transport and parking invoices for the Cumbria County Council civic dinner in May 2010.
In 2011 he used the card to pay for a £133.50 stay at the Mercure Hotel in South Yorkshire while he attended an interview, along with £9.90 in parking charges.
There are also a string of invoices for restaurants including Pizza Express, for meals following evening meetings.
Mr Hyde had also used the card, which is funded by taxpayers’ money, to pay for petrol while on holiday in France and a cinema visit – but Cumbria police have confirmed both transactions were repaid from Mr Hyde’s personal bank account.
He also used the card to pay for car repairs running to the tune of £374.59 in September 2011.
While at an international conference on child safety online, Mr Hyde claimed for expenses at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Manama in excess of £146.
Matthew Sinclair, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “These huge claims are deeply worrying, especially at a time when police forces have to find savings.
“Mr Hyde appears to have shown a cavalier attitude when spending taxpayers’ money.
“It’s vital that senior officers are transparent about their expenses claims to ensure accountability.”
Mr Hyde, who has been suspended from his job since last September following allegations of serious misconduct which bear no relation to expense claims, told the Evening Mail that due to his ongoing suspension he felt it would be inappropriate to comment.
Cumbria police refused to comment on individual transactions or force policy.

There doesn't seem to be anything unusual or particularly extravagant in the Chief constables expenses. In fact basic business travel on behalf of the force with such transparency should be applauded. Â£5,600 is not a lot.I travel to London regularly for work and my last trip cost Â£295. It adds up very quickly with no fault from the individual.sensationalist article, it's like reading the Daily Mail
I fail to see what the problem is here. He didn't claim for a duck pond or moat upkeep did he? Mountains out of mole hills, springs to mind. Let the man get on with his job.
