SPORT and technology have been used as the focus for two transition projects for pupils.

Two Furness Academy teachers have been working with children at Greengate Junior School, in Barrow, some of whom will be making the move up to secondary school in September.

The Year Six pupils, who join Barrow’s Furness Academy in the next academic year, will be moving into the brand new building, which is under construction.

There is a buzz around sport following the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the children at Greengate Junior School are inspired. Furness Academy sports teacher, Steph Crane, has been visiting the school in Greengate Street to provide specialist sports lessons.

The Year Six group have been taking part in gym sessions with Mrs Crane. The sports-trained teacher has been demonstrating some of the gym moves to the children.

Paula Hillman, assistant head at Greengate Junior School, said; “She really motivated even our football minded boys by talking about the strength and stamina that gymnastics requires.”

Furness Academy has also been working with younger groups. Year Four Greengate children have been taking part in iPad workshops with Diane Wilson from the academy.

The group has learnt how useful the technology is for research during lessons.

Greengate Junior School has just bought 40 iPads for use in the classrooms. Furness Academy already widely uses the handheld tablet technology across the secondary curriculum, and some children are also trialling using them at home.

Mrs Hillman said: “It was really useful to get an input from teachers who are already using them educationally.”
