Pupils’ bumper year

PUPILS at Sandside Lodge School have enjoyed a bumper year.

The whole school dressed up in 1950s styles and celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a street party and singalong in June.

Sean Wilson and Lauren McBride were the winners of the fashion parade, with Lauren dressed as a pink lady and Sean dressed as a 1950s school boy.

Students and staff cheered on Liam Jordan as he proudly carried the Olympic torch through Ambleside later that month.

The whole school cheered Liam as he officially opened the school sports day at Ulverston tennis centre on July 10. Liam walked in carrying the Olympic torch to cheering and waving flags.

At Sandside Lodge School staff and students are looking forward to celebrating the achievement of their third Green Flag eco school activities. Students and staff are actively involved in experiencing and exploring different cultures, composting and recycling.

Sixth form students have achieved Duke of Edinburgh awards, even though camping in the rain is not always a pleasant experience. Younger pupils have enjoyed working in the woods and fields using the Forest Schools principles to enrich their learning.

During the penultimate week of the summer term staff and students have enjoyed an Olympic-themed activity week with both cultural and sporting events being highlights. Earlier in the year they held celebration assemblies and learnt about the distress caused by conflict and war, which included a Remembrance Day assembly and a visit to Auschqitz by student Blake Martin and teaching assistant Kevin Roberts.

The school has registered with UNICEF as a rights respecting school and over the next two years will be working to achieve recognition through the Rights respecting School Award.

The school was pleased to celebrate winning the school category in the Ulverston carnival this year with its recycling float. Special thanks go to Sarah Walduck for all her hard work and organisation.

Throughout the year the pupils’ achievements have been captured using digital photography and film, which the school was able to share with some 70 parents and friends at a film night held on July 11.
