Problems with Furness General Hospital maternity services lead to 37 claims in 10 years

THE trust responsible for running Furness General has seen 37 cases of civil action relating to the Barrow hospital's maternity services instigated in just 10 years.
Since 2002, the trust has settled five cases, paying compensation to the families in question.
Another 32 civil cases remain open, as of June 20, 2012.
The information was revealed by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, which runs FGH, as the result of a query submitted by bereaved Dalton father, James Titcombe, under the Freedom of Information Act.
Mr Titcombe's son, Joshua, died in a Newcastle hospital in October 2008, nine days after being born at Furness General.

Fe male, well said and my heart goes out to you and your family. Our family has been devastated by failures at FGH too, our baby died due to failures of staff at FGH maternity unit. The saddest part of it all, is knowing that lessons from what when wrong were not taken and little was done to make things safer. There needs to be a public inquiry and those responsible have to be held to account.

Lets put this into perspective - 37 claims in 11 years equates to 3.36 claims per year since 2002, very low numbers given the number of deliveries at the fgh unit.
I suspect this will be around an average number based on delivery rates per year.Accidents happen, mistakes happen, death and disability of a neonate is a sad but recognised complication that often despite best efforts can happen. surely one would prefer energy to be spent on ensuring those individual/teams whose processes have failed need supporting as oppose to victimising?
Midwifery lead care at fgh is an unsafe option so start supporting this unit before we all loose this vital service.
