Performers set the stage alight at Furness Academy ‘Olympics’ event

HUNDREDS of people watched an Olympics-inspired celebration which saw young people take to the stage and shine.

Furness Academy South Site hosted a community extravaganza on Friday evening which featured dance, musical theatre, sport and games.

The Barrow school had been due to hold track and field events during the day for pupils from 16 nearby primary schools but the event was cancelled earlier in the week due to the wet sports field. Staff hope to reorganise a sporting event during the Paralympics in September.

The entertainment on Friday night included performances by Furness Academy’s talented Glee Club and toe-tapping sleek moves from various academy dancers, including pupils who were involved in the Big Dance event in Liverpool, and young people representing Deemon Dance Academy. Lady Gaga tribute act, Lisa Gaga, also supported the festivities.

Inside there were Shotokan Karate demonstrations, dance mat activities, games such as beat the goalie and shoot the hoop, and face painting.

The visitors also enjoyed tasting food from around the world and all sorts of fun and games. The evening culminated with a firework display.

Furness Academy is an Olympic Get Set Network school and has been using the value and spirit of the London 2012 Olympic Games across the curriculum. Each learning group has been representing an Olympic nation which they have researched.

As part of being an Olympic Get Set school the academy has been allocated tickets for women’s football at the Olympics and athletics at the Paralympics.

Neil Tippins, the academy’s director of community enrichment and specialism, organised the celebration and the team who worked on the event.

Helen Wright, school games organiser at the academy, said: “The event was a great cultural celebration which brought the community together.

“It was a safe and enjoyable family event. Everyone said how nice it was to see the students perform.”
