A Cockermouth hotel has won an international award after its guests rated it as outstanding.

The Trout Hotel

It is the second major accolade for The Trout Hotel this summer, the latest being the Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor.

This award is based entirely on the reviews that have been posted on the travel website about the hotel.

Only 10 per cent of accommodation listed on the website receives the award.

The hotel’s managing director Sue Eccles said the achievement was testament to the attention to detail, commitment and enthusiasm displayed by staff.

“The TripAdvisor award is based on reviews by our customers and it is great to know that they believe our accommodation, service, food and facilities are among the best that the hospitality industry has to offer,” she added.

Businesses must maintain an overall rating of four or higher, out of a possible five to qualify for the award.

Christine Petersen, president of TripAdvisor for Business, said: “The Certificate of Excellence award gives highly rated establishments around the world the recognition they deserve.

“We want to applaud these businesses for offering TripAdvisor travellers a great customer experience.”

The four-star hotel faced a £3m repair bill after it was at the centre of the catastrophic 2009 floods which wiped pout homes and businesses on Cockermouth Main Street.

The hotel, on the banks of the River Derwent, was also recently named as one of the best large hotels in the country, securing bronze at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2012.

With a 20-plus year history, the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence are the highest accolades in English tourism.
