A CONSTRUCTION scheme between the LLW (low level waste) Repository and Graham Construction has been hailed as a “credit to the company and the industry”.

The Engineering, Design and Construction Framework was highlighted by the Considerate Constructors Scheme, a national scheme.

LLW Repository, at Drigg, was independently assessed and particular attention was paid to its community engagement, environment and workforce safety.

The constructors scheme chose to look at infrastructure programmes at nuclear licensed sites. LLWR had undergone major construction projects over the previous 12 months and has several planned for the next few years.

Tom Lawson, CCS monitor, who visited the site, said: “This project continues to achieve a very high level of overall compliance with the scheme’s code of considerate practice and is a credit to the company and the industry.”

During the assessment, the repository’s ecological and waste management issues were praised.

Its community engagement, safety and workforce was described as “exceptional”.

Tony Buchanan, LLWR’s lead programme manager, said: “The integrated working between LLWR and Graham Construction has seen us constantly strive for improvement in delivery, and this has been recognised by CCS.”
