A CUMBRIAN cider is set to be launched at The Local Food Show in Carlisle tomorrow (Thurs).

Waulkmill Cider - which is based just across the border in Westerkirk - has created the drink with culinary and dessert apples from Cumbria's orchards and will launch a competition at the event to name the product.

The launch comes a week after Waulkmill was named Scotland’s artisan drink producer of the year at the Scottish Rural Awards.

The new Cumbrian cider is the second in a series of Borderlands inspired ciders, joining Muckletoon Rosie which is produced from apples from the Langholm area.

Chris Harrison, who started Waulkmill Cider in 2010, said: “The local heritage apples which are found in each region give each cider a distinctly local flavour, so the idea behind these Borderlands regional ciders is to capture and maintain that distinctive local taste. I’m very keen that the name of the new Cumbrian cider should inspired by its home region, so I’m looking forward to meeting with people at Carlisle on Thursday to hear their thoughts about the new cider and its potential new name.”

The Local Food Show takes place at Borderway Mart, Rosehill, Carlisle, from 12noon-5pm and will showcase produce from across Cumbria, Dumfries & Galloway and Northumbria.
