A flood-hit family business is bouncing back to success with a nomination in The Bay Living Awards.

Lakeland Kitchens in Kendal, have been nominated in the Best Business Team category.

The family run company sells kitchens, with attention to detail and the supplying of quality products, key to their success.

The firm has only just got back on its feet after Storm Desmond.

Owner, Mel Wright said: "In December 2015 we, like many companies, were hit hard by the floods. The water came into the showroom about two feet high, causing what we thought was minimal damage.

"The team came in all guns blazing to get the clean up done on the Monday, and we were on a high that evening as our showroom, though not perfect, was ready to open again.

"We then had some terrible news. The loss adjuster for our landlord said that the premises were timber framed, which in turn meant our showroom would need to be taken out. All of the floors and walls were removed, so that the timbers in the showroom could be treated, and the building saved."

Ms Wright, added: "We had to set up a temporary showroom, had three months without telephones or the internet, lost six months of accounts, lost all of our CAD drawings (computer aided design), customer quotes, and had no showroom displays, but as a team, we were determined not to let this beat us.

"Whilst in our temporary showroom we pulled together, and were awarded three building contacts. We got through a tough time and came out at the other end with a better, stronger team.

"During such a devastating time, some of our customers also suffered, losing all of their possessions and kitchens."

Ms Wright added: "We are obviously very proud to be nominated for a Bay Living award."

The Bay Living Awards, run by CN Group, the parent company of in-cumbria and inTheBay, has its ceremony at Lancaster University on September 7.
