What does the Apprentice Reform mean for Employers?

NON-LEVY EMPLOYERS <50 STAFF

If your business has less than 50 employees and you recruit a 16-18 year old apprentice, following the reforms the training will be fully funded (at no cost to you, the employer) with an additional £1000 for recruiting a 16-18 year old. You may also access the Government Age Grant of £1500 until July 2017 for a direct apprentice start.

Opportunities:

<li>Recruit Apprentices (16 -18 years old) from 1st May 2017 will benefit your business by £1000 per Apprentice.

If your business has less than 50 employees and you wish to recruit or upskill your existing staff who are 19+, you will need to pay a 10% fee for training, with the government paying the other 90%. You may access the Government Age Grant of £1500 until July 2017 for 16-24 year old apprentice starts. You can’t access the grant for existing employees and the Government is ending the Age Grant in July 2017.

<li>Recruit Apprentices or upskill existing staff in March or April 2017 as the training will be fully funded before 1st May 2017.

An additional £1500 Age Grant is available for new Apprentice recruits between 16 -24 years old.

<li>Recruit an Apprentice (16-18 years old) and upskill an existing member of staff to maximize the incentives

Example (May - July 2017):

1 x Business Administration Existing employee Upskill (19-24 years) @ 10% fee = £250

1 x Business Administration Apprentice (16-18 years) = 100% fully funded

1 x Employer incentive (16 – 18 years) = £1000

1 x £1500 Age Grant = £1500

Balance (Grants and Incentives – 10% Fee) = £2250

<li> Recruit Apprentices or upskill existing staff in March or April 2017 as the training will be fully funded, incurring no fee for enrolments before 1st May 2017, or recruit 16-18 year old apprentice(s) to maximise the employer incentive.

Example:

1 x Busine 1 x Business Administration Existing employee Upskill @ 10% fee = £250

1 x Business Administration Apprentice (16-18 years) @10% fee = £250

Employer incentive (16 – 18 years) = £1000
