A taxi was stolen at knifepoint during an early morning robbery in Carlisle today.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

It happened near to B&M Bargains in Wigton Road at 5.45am.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

Cumbria Police said they received a report of a knife-point robbery involving a taxi.

The vehicle – a white Skoda Octavia taxi – was subsequently found burnt out and abandoned in the Cummersdale area.

Two men, both in their 20s, were found by officers in the Dalston area.

The men were subsequently arrested on suspicion of robbery and drink driving.

They are currently in police custody.

Detective Sergeant Chris Brennand is appealing for witnesses.

He said: “Whilst two men were swiftly arrested, I would like to urge anyone who might have information which could assist us to get in touch.

“We would particularly like to hear from anyone who saw the robbery incident in Wigton Road, anyone who witnessed the car being abandoned or anyone who saw anyone suspicious between the car being abandoned in Cummersdale and the men being arrested in the Dalston area.”
