THE mother of a woman who is living with terminal cancer has claimed social services are not doing enough to support her.

Briar Butler, of Barque Street, Barrow, has an incurable brain tumour.

She currently receives four 15-minute meetings a day to allow nurses from Furness General Hospital to administer medication, as well as daily visits to Royal Preston Hospital for radiotherapy.

But the rest of the time the family have to help Miss Butler care for herself.

And her mother Beverley Shirreffs said her daughter was not receiving enough care from professionals to meet her needs.

“I’m at my wits end,” said Ms Shirreffs. “I want to know why my daughter isn’t being given the care she needs.”

Miss Butler is now paralysed on the left side of her body, her memory and vision are limited and she is unable to walk.

Her family do their best to help her, but her mother, who lives in Dalton and does not have access to a car, admitted they need more professional support. Ms Shirreffs believes her daughter should have been entitled to a continuous care package following her release from hospital.

She said she has since been released on three separate occasions with no care package from adult social care in place.

Ms Shirreffs claims, despite multiple attempts by the family and other medical professionals to contact adult social care and request additional support for her daughter, the family has not heard anything back.

She said: “We’ve tried to contact them to say Briar shouldn’t be left on her own but haven’t heard anything. They keep telling us they don’t have to talk to us as we’re not the patient.

“They told Briar last week a care package would be in place by the time she got back from a holiday this week with her son. But nothing has happened.”

A spokesman from Cumbria County Council said: “We are working directly with Briar to ensure her care and support needs are being met. We are not aware of any contact from Senior Medical staff.”
