New Ulverston superstore would ‘make the A590 unsafe’

A NEW Sainsbury’s superstore in Ulverston could lead to hundreds more cars using the A590 each day and make the road unsafe, according to a town councillor.

Have your say

A question for all the readers of these comments:
Don't you find that on this issue of new supermarkets that 90 percent of the comments are in favour of the Supermarket idea?

I for one don't get my comment in favour of maintaining a thriving shopping Ulverston centre without a supermarket published.

Could it not be that we are experiencing some very biased media coverage of this to
topic?

This matter is far too important to be left to the backward looking Ulverston Town Council or the Kendal based LibDems and it should be left to residents to determine the need for such a store. By residents I mean everyone within the catchment area for the store, in particular Swarthmoor, where there are no shopping facilities and the SLDC has decided that we need hundreds of new houses.
Canal Head is a classic example of council prevarication and this shouldn’t be repeated here.
The location is perfect as it falls midway between the town and Swarthmoor and already has an excellent bus service. Unlike Booths, that has no public bus service and is nowhere near as accessible.
I believe that there should be a ballot of all local residents and that just for once our so called representatives (councillors), should listen to the people they represent. That in itself would be a novel innovation.

I have seen the plans and I am concerned about their plans for the junction they are going to create. Bearing in mind the location will be just after the dual carriageway coming out of town I think it has the potential to be incredibly dangerous. The traffic that comes through now does not adhere to the speed limit.

As for the supermarket itself I was originally opposed to it because I don't want to see it have a negative impact on the trading in the town. However, after giving it more thought (and visiting a Sainsbury in Penrith) I don't think it will. Those people who already use supermarkets may switch to Sainsbury or they may not. Either way I don't think it will take trade from town. I personally will still get my veg etc from town.

Whilst they are at it why don't the keep "Ulverston in the Past" brigade lobby to close down Booth's as well as they might consider the Booth's roundabout a major hazard. It needs investment and development in our town to save it from becoming a town known for Charity and Tea Shops.I am afraid Ulverston Council is taking on the mentality of a Village hall committee, come on we are in the 21st century.

Hundreds more cars on the A590?? Surely common sense says thats nonsense. These same vehicles would be travelling to Barrow! These 'Keep Ulverston Special' people genuinely need to get a grip.

Sounds a bit of not on my door step from cllr Jenkinson. lives near the area of the planed site, The A590 is and and aways will be busy, the store could slow down traffic by paying for lights on the road anyway. good comments from Cllr Lister lets gets some facts.

Given that Sainsburys would have to pay for road improvements to accommodate the extra traffic, then it is likely the road would be made safer in the long term anyway.

i've never heard such rubbish in my life, so does that mean that when i'm driving all the way to barrow for my weekly shop that my car just disappears when i leave the house and magically reappears in Swarthmoor!!??? idiots, there's still going to be the same volume of traffic on the A590, we have to use it to get to barrow. seriously, build Sainsburys. personally i think that the council should put ballot papers through the doors of every Ulverston resident and for JUST ONCE let us decide!!!!!

So, based on this opinion, surely that means any business wanting to set up in Ulverston would now be advised to stay away because we wouldn't want the extra traffic making the roads dangerous!
