New timetable for Carlisle's BID vote

A fresh timetable has been announced for retailers in Carlisle city centre who will vote on whether they want to be part of a Business Improvement District (BID).

Supporters say the move would significantly boost the city centre’s economy.

In an announcement, ‘yes’ campaigners have spelled out the benefits, pointing out that the city centre is under pressure as a retail centre as the recession continues.

Their statement says: “Working together to promote retail in the city and improve the customer experience, we can help keep Carlisle at the forefront of shopping in the North. The BID gives us a strong voice and the power to do something constructive.

“It is important that everyone contributes their thoughts and experiences to make our BID a success in the city.”

The original yellow ballot papers for the BID poll have now been declared invalid due to an error by the Electoral Reform Society.

Qualifying businesses will already have received new ballot papers.

They are pink in colour. They have to be returned on or before Thursday, September 27 for the vote to count.

The ballot period runs until Thursday September 27. Yes campaigners say that BID will ensure the area remains successful and profitable.

Though there will be no reduction in the services provided by the City Council, the BID would, say its supporters, offer benefits that include:

  • Reduced operating costs for businesses;
  • Effective and sustainable city centre management;
  • Marketing and events to encourage shoppers and visitors;
  • A cleaner and safer and more accessible city centre.

Several business owners have come forward to act as members of a steering group for the proposed BID.

The ballot result will be announced on September 29, and if successful the BID term begins on January 1, 2013.
