New North Lonsdale Agricultural Show site confirmed

A POPULAR agricultural show has found a new home after being forced to relocate.

The North Lonsdale Agricultural Show was has been held at Bardsea showfield for the last 25 years but organisers had to make other arrangements when the site was sold at auction in June.

This year’s show will now take place at the Recreation Hall fields, in Urswick, on July 31.

Margaret Coward, show secretary, said the committee was looking forward to the challenge of adapting to the new location.

She said: “The people of Urswick seem delighted we are going there and we have had a few more people wanting to come on to the committee.

“There is quite a lot of work to do – there is an awful lot of planning – but it has pulled the committee together.”

The future of the show had been put in doubt when the owners of Bardsea showfield split the land into five parcels and sold them at auction for just under £500,000.

But organisers said all along they would find a way to make sure the 175-year-old show continued.

Despite the auction occurring before last year’s show, the vendors made it a condition of sale that the field be used to host the show in 2012.

After that, the committee set about finding a new home for the much-loved event and preparations are already well under way for the 2013 show.

Mrs Coward said in some ways the new location would be an improvement. She said : “It is a very flat field so it will be easier for people with pushchairs and wheelchairs.”

The cattle championship will return with a £100 prize for the winner and there will also be £50 up for grabs in the sheep championship.

The usual entertainment and marquees will be on offer and Alice’s Dog Show, which was inspired by Ulverston teenager Alice Pyne and proved very successful last year, will also make a return.

Have your say

would have been better to find somewhere more on the 'tourist' track, not many people know where urswick is, unless they're local. also not going to get as many people walking to it from ulverston and having a drink in the beer tent, and parking is likely to be much less....

after actually being a sponser for it previously, I think we'll be giving it a miss this year due to the location.
might be the best in a bad situation, but not the best for people travelling to it, or for 'locals' walking to it from a larger town that used to bump up visitor numbers.
