More awards for Cumbria-made Lake District cheese
Last updated at 15:11, Friday, 03 August 2012
Staff behind a brand that is fast becoming a national favourite are celebrating yet more success.
The Lake District Cheese Company has lifted a string of titles at the International Cheese Awards.
It is yet more praise for the workers at Aspatria Creamery, run by farmer-owned co-operative First Milk, who make the multi-award winning product.
The company won the Guy Smith Memorial Trophy for Best Single Mature Cheddar, scooped a gold Award in the Coloured Mature Cheddar category, and was also highly commended in the vintage, mild and mature cheddar categories.
These latest awards follow wins at the Great Yorkshire, Royal Welsh, Royal Highland, Cheshire and Bath & West agricultural shows.
The Lake District brand is currently the number three cheddar brand in the UK with someone in Britain buying a pack of Lake District Cheddar approximately every 1.5 seconds.
Aspatria creamery manager Martin Lomas said: “Everyone involved, from the farmers to the creamery staff, is incredibly proud of the cheddar we produce and we are especially pleased to have our work recognised with this award.”
The awards are the latest good news for the brand, which has being promoted across the UK as part of a major campaign.
The brand’s ambassadors, Cow & Bunny, together with the Lake District Cheddar Roadshow team, are well on track to meet and greet more than 750,000 consumers during the course of the summer.
The campaign will continue until late September.
Future stops planned include Workington and Keswick.
