Mock interviews help ready pupils

SECONDARY students experienced a taste of the world of work during a day of mock interviews.
Millom School Year 11 students took part in interviews with people from business and industry with the aim of giving them an insight into, and help them prepare for, future real life work interviews.
They had an individual interview with different representatives from business, industry and education.
The organisations involved included; Tornado Wire, Millom Network Centre, BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines, Furness College and HMP Haverigg.
The interviews were followed by an afternoon of careers talks from BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines, Lancaster University, Furness College and the British Army.
The mock interview programme, organised by director of guidance, Stewart Robinson, also sought to give an insight into employer expectations, and students prepared for their interviews by submitting a CV and applications, as well as preparing how they will present themselves by their appearance and communication skills.
Mr Robinson said feedback from the business and industry employers has proved really helpful.
Representatives from BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines said students have an excellent opportunity at Millom School, and that all students had prepared paperwork, thought about their answers and had excellent manners. They said it was exactly what students need when preparing for the future.
Others noted how impressed they were by how many of the students had clear plans for their future, and that they were very self-aware.
Paul Stewart, manager of Millom Network Centre, said: “The interview process was very realistic. The students are a credit to the school and it is hard to believe that they are only 15 years old.”
Staff Sergeant Pete Sharpe, from the British Army, said he could see that students had prepared well for the process and were interested in getting things right.
Mr Robinson said: “As always, our students excelled themselves with their willingness to get involved in this process. I am immensely proud of them.”
Pam Atkinson, director of learning for Key Stage Four, said: “This is an invaluable experience for our students, helping to equip them with the necessary skills they need for their future.”
Ian Smith, headteacher of Millom School, said; “Mock interviews are an essential part of the wider provision the school makes. I am very grateful to those people who gave up their time to interview the students.”
