The risk of freezing conditions has forced the Met Office to issue a yellow warning for Cumbria and the north west.

Temperatures are expected to approach freezing, with outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow expected to move south across the region overnight.

Snow is most likely over the Pennines but clear skies to the rear of this present a risk of ice and frost.

The minimum temperature tonight is expected to be around -2 °C.

The Highways Agency said: "Drivers should check their local media for updated weather and travel advice before setting out on journeys.

"If they are travelling they should keep up to date with weather and travel advice, heed warnings and electronic message signs and drive to conditions - leaving extra time for journeys and extra room for braking. They should avoid sudden manoeuvres such as braking or changing lanes suddenly."
