One of the women doing tonight’s Midnight Walk for Hospice at Home West Cumbria will have some extra sparkle to her outfit, because she will be wearing her chains of office.

MIDNIGHT MAYOR: Mayor of Allerdale Carole Armstrong will wear her chain of office when she takes part in the Hospice at Home West Cumbria Midnight Walk tonight

Carole Armstrong, mayor of Allerdale, will be doing this year’s walk, which starts from Workington’s Tesco store on New Bridge Road.

She said: “It is a worthwhile cause and they don’t get that much from the NHS.

“I went to their annual meeting and the Light up a Life service, and I was really impressed with what they do.”

Councillor Armstrong, 62, of Poole Road, Salterbeck, has chosen the hospice as one of her mayoral year charities.

She is one of 48 clients of Mossbay Road’s Hair Again salon who have signed up for the women-only fund-raising event.

Janice Blackburn, salon owner, has been recruiting as many of her female clients as possible to take part in the six-mile event.

The group of women, aged 35 to 75, will be dressing up and have a special song which they plan to sing on the way round.

Coun Armstrong said: “Janice does a lot for the hospice and she told me she was doing the walk and wouldn’t let me leave until I signed up.

“She has done really well getting so many women involved.”

Coun Armstrong will also be joined by her daughter, Denise Courtney, on the walk and said that all the carnivals she is attending as part of her duties as mayor have been giving her plenty of preparation.
