A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a woman was found at a flat in Workington.

Demi Burns, aged 21, was discovered in her home at Newlands Gardens, Moorclose, just after 3.30pm yesterday.

Police say they are treating her death as “suspicious and unexplained”.

A Home Office post mortem has been held and further tests are ongoing to establish the cause of death.

Officers arrested a local man, 28, on suspicion of murder and he was taken into police custody for questioning. He was today bailed until January, pending further inquiries.

Police spent yesterday afternoon and last night at the address, with officers standing guard outside.

Steve Bradley, 50, who lives nearby, said: “All I saw were police cars at about 4.30pm when I came back from practising with my band.

“I feel a bit unsettled. There is no such thing as community any more.”

A local woman, who was visiting her family in the area, saw large numbers of police and a group of crime scene investigators wearing white overalls outside the flat at about 10.50pm yesterday.

She said: “It was eerie in the dark and like something off the television. You don’t expect something like this in a residential area where there is a mixture of young and old people.”

Another woman, who lives nearby, said the police and paramedics were there from about 3.30pm.

A police spokesman said: “We attended a property in Workington at 3.32pm yesterday after receiving a call about a sudden death.

“At this stage, the death is being treated as suspicious and unexplained. An investigation has been undertaken and officers will be working to formally identify the woman and inform her immediate family.”

This morning there was one police car outside the flat, which is on a terrace of houses next to a car park.

Alyson Beck, 27, who also lives nearby, said: “I am quite scared now, I have got my little lad in my house and with me being on my own as well.

“Knowing something like this has happened on your own doorstep is little bit scary. I can’t believe it,” she added.
