‘I enjoy being the public face of a great college’

What was your first job?

Dustbinman with Tameside MBC.

How did you get your current job?

I’ve worked at the sixth form since 1995, this was an internal promotion starting in September 2012.

Describe the company you work for in one sentence.

Quite simply, the best post-16 education provider in Cumbria!

How many hours do you work a week?

I don’t count.

How many people are you responsible for?

There are more than 800 students at college and quite a few staff.

What’s your greatest achievement?

Surviving the teenage years of two daughters.

What gives you the biggest work buzz?

The expression on a student’s face that shows they have now understood something they’d been struggling with.

What’s your motto at work?

Try to do your work in such a way that helps others in doing theirs.

What’s the best thing about being a boss?

Being a public face of such an excellent college.

What’s the worst thing about being a boss?

Having to make decisions which might impact negatively on people who don’t deserve it.

What’s your favourite website?

BBC News.

Your first car?

My dad’s Austin Ital.

How do you relax?

With family, at church, watching sport or DVDs, on the allotment, on hilltops.

What’s the best thing about doing business in Cumbria?

The quality of the people, the proximity to the Lakes, the relative lack of traffic.

I’d be impressed if you could find anything on my desk.
