Iggesund invites farmers to its mill to hear about biomass plans

Iggesund is inviting farmers to its Cumbrian mill to encourage them to grow energy crops to supply a new £108 biomass plant.
The mill is holder three presentation evenings at its Workington mill to promote its biopower project.
A spokesman said: “We would like to invite farmers to visit the mill to find out more about our Biopower project, and how they can play a part in supplying our future energy needs. The presentation will explore some of the myths surrounding crops such as willow, and provide farmers with all the facts and figures they need to help them decide if this is the right choice for their farm.”
Presentations will take place on 29th August, 4th September and 11th September. Each evening will start with refreshments at 7:00pm
Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Further information Neil Watkins on 07780 480695, or email neil.watkins@iggesund.com.
Iggesund has been active in recent months securing supplies for its biomass venture.
Test harvesting has been taking place on a farm near Carlisle before the biomass boiler at the paperboard factory goes online next year.
Machines have been cutting 30ft tall willow crops at a farm at Durdar, near Carlisle.
Iggesund staff have also been attending local agricultural shows to tell farmers about the scheme.
Neil Watkins, alternative fuels manager for the biomass project, said: “We’re trialling different harvesting methods and signing up people now because they have got to get applications in to Defra.”
Ulf Lofgren, Iggesund finance director, said: “We’re not expecting Cumbria to become covered by energy crops but we do believe this can be a convenient way for farmers to diversify and gain an additional source of income.
“We can take care of harvesting and transporting the crop and will offer index-linked contracts so farmers can count on a reliable source of income for many years.”
