Huge jump in new customers for the Cumberland

CUMBERLAND Building Society experienced a 60 per cent increase in the number of new current accounts opened last month compared with the average number of accounts opened over the previous three months.

Research from the building society showed that a quarter of the customers who opened current accounts in July did so as a direct result of being unhappy with their existing bank.

The Cumberland is one of only four building societies in the country to offer a full current account service.

John Leveson, deputy chief executive of the Cumberland, said: “The significant increase in new current accounts opened indicates that people are looking for an alternative to their existing current account provider.

“The Cumberland offers a traditional approach to banking with local branches and accessible branch managers, but provides a modern current account, with features such as internet and mobile banking.

“As a result, we believe that we are the alternative to the high street banks that many people want.”
