 South Lakes MP Tim Farron has asked the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to step in and support people losing their jobs at Comet.

Comet has already closed 27 stores and another 14 are earmarked to be shut by the end of the week, putting another 800 jobs at risk on top of the 1,000 jobs already lost. The retailer had 236 stores when it was still operating. The Barrow store is among the stores closing.

Mr Farron has asked JobCentre plus to step in and help people who are losing their jobs. Tim has also pledged to assist anyone he can and asked people to get in touch with him.

He said: “For people to lose their jobs so close to Christmas is awful. It is shocking blow for local people. I have requested that Job Centre plus pull out all the stops and to do everything they can to help people affected. I am keen to help anyone I can too. If I can assist any way at all I am asking them to get in touch with me and I will do whatever I can to assist.”
