Children in Need

FUNDRAISERS across Barrow and the south Lakes got into the spirit of Children in Need with a series of wacky events.
The annual international appeal, which aims to tackle child poverty, hopes to beat last year’s total of £26,332,334 – which was £7m up on the sum raised in 2010.
In Barrow, the final of a ‘Strictly Spotty Talent Show’ raised laughs and cheers at Cambridge Primary School, Cambridge Street.
Staff were dressed as TV’s Strictly Come Dancing judges Len Goodman, Craig Revel-Horwood, Bruno Tonioli and Darcey Bussell.
Trying to impress the prestigious panel were the best two acts from each class, selected after a series of heats held throughout the week.
School secretary Emma Alalouf said: “It has been really busy and everybody has been really enjoying it. There has been a lot of shouting and cheering.”
Following the event, staff and pupils hosted a bring and buy sale to further boost Children in Need coffers.
Youngsters at Old Vicarage Day Nursery in Hartington Street, Barrow, also did their bit.
Gayle Cooke, child care manager at the nursery, said: “The children have been baking and making crispy cakes, and the babies had a teddy bear’s picnic. We always make an effort for Children in Need, and they really enjoyed it. The fundraising has gone well and the tubs all seem to be full.”
North Walney Primary School in Duddon Drive, Walney, got their pupils into the kitchen to make cakes and biscuits for a coffee morning.
Headteacher Phillip Webster said the school raised more than £400.
“The children sold the cakes to parents, grandparents and members of the community who came to support us,” he said.
Millom Infant School in Lapstone Road also got into the fundraising spirit with a sponsored duck walk.
Headteacher Pauline Webster said: “The children loved it.”
